Attendees will be provided with a step-by-step real-world baseball example illustrating the use of data mining as a powerful extension to classical statistical analysis. Data mining tools are able to find patterns in data and variable interactions that would be difficult, if not impossible, to detect using standard approaches. TreeNet stochastic gradient boosting is used to identify non-linear relationships and key predictors in the 2010 and 2011 baseball performance statistics datasets. In this example, data mining identifies previously hidden patterns and compares how player performance has changed over time related to player/team success during the regular season.
